The Blind Hem Stitch

The blind hem stitch is a popular way of hemming clothing, particularly on lighter and silkier fabrics, as the stitching is virtually invisible from the front of the fabric. The alternative way to hem clothes invisibly is with the slip stitch, which is also a great technique to learn.

 

As with a few other hand sewing stitches, such as the running stitch and the backstitch, the blind hem stitch can be sewn with a sewing machine...so why do people ever do it by hand?

Well, the big advantage of hand sewing is that you have greater control over your stitches; their position and their size. So when sewing the blind hem stitch by hand, it's actually easier to make it blend in and attain a more 'invisible' result.
