If you have ever seen modern-day oil cloth, you'll know that it is a waterproof plasticky fabric that is mostly used to make tablecloths or similar.
Well, traditionally, oil cloth was a bit different and was simply cloth impregnated with oil.
This meant that the fabric stayed almost the same after the waterproofing process, rather than feeling like plastic.
