The Catch Stitch
The catch stitch is used primarily for hemming heavy (thick) or knit (stretchy) fabrics, lined garments, or curved hems.
This is because the criss-cross stitches allow for a bit of 'give', and they also help flatten the fabric layers against one another.
It's a quick way of hemming as well, and a very simple technique for beginners to learn.

The herringbone catch stitch is the more popular choice of catch stitch, particularly in dressmaking, as the extra criss-crossing adds strength to the stitching.
